An inner belt freeway at Charleston, South Carolina would extend from S. C. Route 171 on James Island northerly across the Stono River, through a portion of Johns Island and across the Ashley River to a terminus in North Charleston for a length of about 18 miles. Environmental impacts include improved vehicular access between North Charleston and James Island; increased noise and air pollution in new corridor; relief of noise and air pollution on existing street systems, displacement of residents and businesses; and encroachment on marshland adjacent to rivers and waterways.
