An objective method of measuring bridge approach roughness and establishing priorities for repair is described. Car body reaction to roughness is recorded on a graph and rating can be established by measuring the vertical movements of the recording pen. The equipment is mounted in a sedan, and an operational speed of 50 MPH over approaches allows for safe, fast recordings under traffic conditions.
