The use of instrumentation as an aid in the docking of ships began in the early 1960's. With the advent of large ships, especially tankers of 100,000 DWT and larger, it became apparent that docking pilots require more than 'eyeball' methods to dock ships quickly and safely. Docking accidents became more numerous, causing ship operators and dock owners considerable damage and loss of revenue. In response to a need for docking instrumentation, programs were initiated to develop the required instrumentation. Cooperative programs between some oil companies and instrumentation companies to develop docking systems were started. Other instrumentation companies developed docking systems independently. As a result of these efforts, several systems have been developed which are presently in use. Most of these docking systems have been installed on VLCCs from 100,000 DWT and larger. Other docking systems have been installed at docks requiring no ship installation. Company brochures and periodical literature has been issued in which these systems are described and discussed. This literature is reviewed in this report.
