Environmental and ship performance data were collected aboard the USCGC POLAR SEA in January-March 1981 as part of a multi-year program to make an operational assessment on the feasibility of a year-round marine transportation system (including offshore structures) serving Alaska. This is the seventh volume of a twelve volume set and focuses on the structural adequacy of the ship's hull. Twelve Prewitt Scratch Strain Gages were procured and installed on USCGC POLAR SEA in compartments 2-E-O-A and 5-D-O-W. Four alternate methods for installation were used. Eight of the twelve records were changed on 20 February, and all the records were recovered upon completion of the deployment. It is concluded that the strain gages can be used as intended. Future installations should be made at locations other than those chosen in this program.
