The ultimate goal to which the effort described in this report is directed is to establish base-line standards for four-wheel vehicle handling properties by objectively defining characteristics of a safe handling vehicle in terms of measurable parameters. To identify the characteristics and parameters and to quantitatively describe values for these parameters that will permit safe handling, it is necessary to study the man-vehicle system in its environment. An essential tool is a comprehensive mathematical vehicle model. Presented in the report is a description of a model developed for the purpose of conducting vehicle handling studies and the results of a combined braking and steering handling study utilizing the described model.
