The flight of the Commercial Protein Crystal Growth (CPCG) middeck payload on STS-65 is sponsored by the Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology (OACT) as part of the commercial development of space programs of the OACT Space Processing Division. The CPCG payload activities emanate from the Center for Macromolecular Crystallography (CMC), a NASA Center for the Commercial Development of Space (CCDS) located at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Activated on November 1, 1985, the overall CMC objective is to foster commercial space flight and related ground based efforts that stem from commercially driven and funded space flight activities.
