The purpose of the study was to obtain data and develop criteria to contribute to the generation of safety standards for used domestic and foreign cars. Four study tasks were undertaken; namely, a literature search, an approved plan of work and methodology, a determination of the status of the used car population by means of data collected in a program of automobile diagnostics, and a data evaluation and interpretation effort which produced the principal results of the study.
