The purpose of this program was to provide for the exploratory development of a Type VII folding sidewall aircraft tire and to demonstrate the tire performance potential by means of a series of static and dynamic laboratory tests. The 36x11 size tire was selected for this feasibility study. A tire with a 25 percent expansion ratio (27 inch mold diameter) was found to have good folding characteristics and to provide specified inflated dimensions. The size designation for this tire is 36/27x11-16 (Inflated OD/Deflated OD x Section Width - Rim Diameter). While the dynamic performance of the 36/27x11-16 has not been fully demonstrated, the results of limited testing are encouraging. A laboratory cured tire sucessfully completed 35 taxi take-off cycles at an unlanding speed of 275 MPH in addition to 10 taxi take-offs at each of 200 MPH, 225 MPH and 250 MPH. This tire also completed 58 land taxi cycles at 190 MPH. A press cured tire successfully completed 40 taxi take-offs at 275 MPH. (Author)
