An outline of the GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) subsystem of the Ariane Transfer Vehicle (ATV) is given. The ATV system is aimed at providing a cost effective means of meeting the logistics requirements of a space station or other low Earth orbit activities. A typical mission involves rendezvous and berthing with the space station to deliver cargo. The vehicle can remain berthed for up to 6 months before departing. The vehicle is finally deorbited on a controlled trajectory designed to allow it to burn up over nonpopulated areas.
