Mission and system requirements of the Ariane Transfer Vehicle (ATV) were defined, and an overall ATV concept was derived. The ATV subsystems (structure, propulsion, thermal control, electrical power, communications, guidance, navigation, control, data handling, and mechanisms) are discussed. Payload accommodation and mission configurations are described. The design relies heavily on Ariane 5 upper composite hardware to achieve a logistics vehicle compatible with Hermes and STS servicing needs. It allows transfer and rendezvous functions, with destructive reentry at the end of the mission. It fully exploits the Ariane low Earth orbit capability (20 tons).
