Spacecraft construction materials are submitted to pyrotechnic shocks during different phases of spaceflight. Difficulties involved in the same shocks during ground-based testing are outlined. Ways of simulating as accurately as possible the conditions of pyrotechnic shock during spaceflight are described. The different types of mechanical and functional damage that can be caused by pyrotechnic shocks are outlined. The rationale for developing qualification criteria for resistance to pyrotechnic shock is explained.
