MIL-STD-1553B is a data transmission standard which defines the electrical and protocol aspects of a 1 MHz serial data bus system. Originally conceived for military avionics, the standard has been selected for a wide variety of applications in other areas and its use continues to spread. An introduction to MIL-STS-1553B for managers, engineers and technicians is provided. This is followed by a detailed review of the complete standard, providing guidance on the most widely accepted UK and US views of those areas which are open to interpretation or clarification. Component and system design issues are addressed throughout the report. Consideration is also given to the problems associated with testing 1553B terminals and, where appropriate, detailed reference is made to the test plans produced by the Society of Automotive Engineers 1553B Test Plan Group.
