The Highway Systems Research Car was used to give a matched sample of 19 pairs of students at Southern Illinois University a pre-test and post-test over a selected 16.5 mile test route consisting of three types of roadway. The control group consisted of 19 students enrolled in a basic driver education course. The experimental group of 19 students enrolled in a driving instructor preparation course had experience in teaching beginning students to drive. By use of a t test it was determined that student driver education teachers did not significantly improve in reduction of the number of fine steering reversals, course steering reversals, speed changes, accelerator reversals, or brake applications per minute, when compared to basic driver education students. On certain driver performance actions each group did show significant improvement.
