The use of satellites for aircraft navigation is discussed. Advantages over present systems, especially in terms of accuracy and coverage are described. A thorough review of the implications of the use of satellites for communications, navigation and surveillance by civil aviation is presented. An overview of the different satellite navigation systems that are implemented or under development is presented. Their potential for use by civil aviation is discussed.
