Samples of deaf and non-deaf drivers were matched on several variables - sex, age, annual mileage, occupation, and area of residence. After matching, no differences were found between deaf and non-deaf females on the two driving record criteria (traffic convictions and accidents). Deaf males had significantly more accidents than their non-deaf counterparts, but did not differ on traffic conviction. The results were interpreted as being suggestive of a slight causal relationship between deafness and accident liability.
