    The film shows the process of chip formation in the orthogonal cutting of a polished and etched specimen of 100 Cr 6 steel used in the manufacture of anti-friction bearings. A relatively uniform flow chip forms in the softannealed and fine-grained perlitic structure, with the upsetting and wedging action caused by the wedge-like part of the cutting tool being readily discernible in the region of deformation. The build-up of material on the cutting edge is particularly noticeable at a cutting speed of 20 metres per minute.
