Simplified scale models are shown to be useful for determining the low-frequency sound transfer properties of an exhaust system of a large low speed marine diesel engine. Experimental results of a full-scale system including silencers closely agree with model results. Ways of constructing, simplifying and investigating the models are indicated.

    Resistance modelling is discussed.

A practical example of calculating the exhaust sound pressure level on a bridge wing due to a typical two-stroke six-cylinder engine with two turbo-superchargers and symmetrical exhaust is treated extensively.

    Remaining problems are summarized.
