As part of an energi optimization research program tests were performed in order to find the effect of natural roughness on the boundary layer characteristics. Based on the test results a simple way of predicting these effects is proposed. The measured velocity defects in the logarithmic overlap area have been applied for computing the effect on local and total skin frictional resistance of ships [1]. An approximate expression for the effect on total skin frictional resistance is proposed.
