For the calculation of the hull vibrations a ship is at present considered as a slender beam. Generally the calculated and measured values of the natural frequencies differ too much.

A calculation technique is in development now which is more adapted to the three dimensional and complex structure of ships. This is the finite element technique. For its application the ship is considered as a composition of plates and beams.

The application of this method to some simple structures gives very encouraging results.
