The solar ship, that is, a ship utilizing a solar photovoltaic system as the auxiliary power system, is an important green-ship technology for the shipbuilding industry. In the conventional sense, the optimum route is defined as the voyage route that ensures the safety, comfort, and low energy consumption. And for the solar ship, increasing the received solar radiation level of the PV system is helpful to improve the efficacy, which is mainly associated with the ship's sailing line, so the distribution of the local solar radiation that should be as one of the factors for the route optimization of the solar ship. A new route optimization method is proposed based on the improved genetic algorithm, which is a powerful practical tool for the dynamic route design of the solar ship. Considering the synergy of the solar ship with route optimization, the proposed method can maximize the efficacy of the solar energy system on the ship and improve the energys' efficiency based on the navigation safety.
