In summary, we have obtained a model of the time dependent gain of an Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). Only one ordinary differential equation need be solved, which is much simpler than previous time dependent models which require solution of coupled partial differential equations. This model agrees with experimental data and can be very useful in the study of power transients in amplified optical networks.
