A driver assistance system has been developed which simultaneously supports the driver with two driving tasks that are most frequently required during normal driving - keeping in lane and maintaining vehicle headway. A new concept of joint driving by the driver and the assistance system is introduced to achieve a driver workload reduction without decreasing the driver's driving motivation. The system has been approved by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as a fundamental driver assistance system, which can be used on expressways in Japan. The system has been introduced on the Japanese market as the Honda intelligent driver support system (HIDS).
