In order to improve hybrid and electrical vehicles functional safety and to avoid sudden failures, it is important to develop reliable and robust on-board diagnostics (OBD). This paper discusses the stator incipient fault diagnosis and monitoring of a permanent magnet synchronous motor for hybrid and electrical vehicles. Incipient stator fault appears as intermittent interturn faults. Studying this phenomenon had shown that it generates specific distortions in the statoric currents as well as in the reference voltages. The fault monitoring method is based on the identification of these specific distortions and on the localization of the phase containing the defected turns. The theoretical and the experimental results show the effectiveness of the method.
