This study demonstrates how to efficiently compute the Q-penalty and the power penalty due to PMD using an accurate receiver model that accounts for an arbitrary pulse shape, unpolarized ASE noise, and realistic receiver filters. This method is used in combination with multiple importance sampling to give an accurate estimate of the outage probability for any given Q-penalty and power penalty margins with little additional computational cost than is required to compute the eye-opening penalty.
