In this paper, the main differences and advantages of generation (Gen) II, Gen III filmed and Gen III filmless image intensified charge-coupled device cameras are demonstrated. Factors such as equivalent background illumination (EBI), modulation transfer function (MTF) and halo/crosstalk are examined. Measurements are taken using identical CCD detectors. The noise factor (NF) is also measured for each and effective quantum efficiencies (QEs) calculated for a given sample with each image intensifier.
