The generation of a real-time time scale with high accuracy, stability, availability and reliability is a very challenging and demanding task. Here, we describe a method applied for the generation of the Italian national time scale UTC(IT), based on the realization of two independent time scales (master and backup) which are then aligned at a high level of accuracy, so that it is possible to switch between the two at any time without discontinuities. This work is mostly focused on the alignment strategy and on the methodology adopted for monitoring and preserving the quality of the final output real-time time scale. Results of a preliminary test in real-time, based on a fully automated process, are also reported and discussed.
