Design issues concerning the construction of a planar spiral winding with geometric width for use in low-profile magnetic components are presented, along with a practical method to achieve low resistance. Equations for resistance predictions are developed for constant- and variable-width pattern designs. Finite-element simulation, (FES) suggests that the winding resistance of a spiral winding with geometric radii may be calculated from the closed-form winding resistance equation of a toroidal planar winding which has the same copper area as the spiral planar winding. Resistance measurement of a sample winding design is presented and compared against analytical prediction.
