Integration of distributed generators (DGs) with conventional grids leads to several protection issues which may affect the reliability and efficiency of the system. Unintentional islanding can be dangerous for utility personnel and may damage the electrical equipment. It also creates the problem related to protection, under/over voltage and frequency, and power degradation issues. In this paper, a novel passive islanding detection technique based on the extraction of envelope is proposed, in which voltage is measured at point of common coupling (PCC) to extract its envelope. RMS value is extracted using the derivative of envelope, which works as an index of the proposed islanding detection technique (IDT). This index is then monitored and compared to a threshold to generate an alert signal. The proposed IDT is simulated and tested using Simulink/MATLAB in an IEEE 13 bus system connected with two DGs.
