An Aurora-2 Thermomicroscopes near-field scanning optical microscope has been utilized to examine the detailed structure of the optical emission pattern of a vertical cavity surface emitting laser. Particular attention is given to changes in the transverse mode structure in relation to the recent observation of pure-frequency bistability in such devices.
