A flux switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine is applicable to electric vehicle applications due to its robust rotor structure and high power density. This paper presented a basic design procedure to improve the efficiency of an FSPM machine. The electromagnetic structure of the FSPM is based on the design dimensions of a switched reluctance machine (SRM) investigated previously competitive to the interior permanent-magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM) of the 2009 Toyota Prius. Investigation on the flux density of the FSPM machine is carried out to reduce the magnetic saturation of the stator and rotor teeth. Also, magnet eddy current loss and magnet flux density vectors are examined to improve the efficiency of the FSPM. At the same base speed and maximum torque, the proposed FSPM machine achieved high efficiency compared to the SRM.
