At present, there is an increasing tendency to consider machines with permanent magnet (PM) excitation for electric vehicle (EV) applications because of their inherent high efficiency. Conventionally, the PM synchronous motor and PM brushless DC motor have some special problems as avoiding irreversible demagnetization caused by high temperature / field-weakening operation. Their rotor structures is determind because of the high speed by complexity and cost. Recently, a viable topology, named the double salient permanent magnet (DSPM) motor, has been introduced. This DSPM motor essentially adopts the same structure as a switched reluctance motor (SRM) but with PMs placed in the stator or rotor. Obviously, the stator can be easily cooled with water to avoid irreversible demagnetization. Hence, the machine is capable to work in high-temperature EV environment. The dominate torque component in the DSPM motor can be produced by applying either a positive current to a phase winding when its PM flux linkage is increasing or a negative current when the flux linkage is decreasing. This feature in torque production makes the difference to the SRM in which the motoring torque can only be produced in one of two strokes. So, the DSPM is expected to offer higher power density than the SRM. Also, a comparison between the DSPM motor and the induction motor shows that the power density of DSPM motor shows a difference of about + 15%. Moreover, a new topology of DSPM motor with split windings is proposed which can double the constant power operation range. These features make the new DSPM motor very competitive in EV applications. The magnetic field distribution of the proposed DSPM motor has been investigated by finite element analysis. The corresponding static characteristics are also deduced and verified by experimental tests in a prototype.
