The dual mechanical port machine is a new class of AC machine for hybrid electric vehicle applications. This paper presents a novel five-phase rare-earth-free reluctance rotor-based dual mechanical port machine and the effect of third harmonic current component will be evaluated. The system configuration and operational principle will be illustrated firstly. Comparative analysis of different rotor structure will be carried out in five-phase synchronous reluctance machines. Finally, the torque capability and effect of third harmonic current of proposed five-phase dual mechanical port machine will be verified by using finite element method.
