Aiming at improving the following performance and ride comfort, we put forward a peculiar adaptive cruise control system on the basis of multi-objective model predictive control method. Especially a novel variable time headway (VTH) spacing strategy was designed as well. Primarily, the upper controllers are established based on proportion integration differentiation (PID) control and multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) to calculate desired acceleration. Posteriorly, we design a lower controller on account of PID control, containing the inverse vehicle model, driving\braking switching logic, and driving\braking actuators. Finally, the co-simulations are implemented with Simulink\CarSim under complex driving conditions. Simulation results indicate that the proposed multi-objective MPC controller can make ego vehicle follow the front vehicle in safe spacing successfully, with small tracking error. And the results also demonstrate that the following performance of proposed VTH spacing strategy performs better than traditional CTH spacing strategy, improving vehicle ride comfort.
