Using electricity within Railway system is attractive both for community and railways company itself : Advantages as global economy, environmental protection, operational benefits as flexibility, reliability, must be mentioned : it is important for new lines specially in case of high speed. That leads to consider the consequences of existence and operating electrical works to allow EMC regarding neighbouring system and within railway system itself. European Community E.C.has published a lot of paper as EMC Directive (89/336), Public Procurement Directive (90/531) and Railway Development Directive (91/440); E.C. is preparing a new one dealing with High Speed Interoperability. Railways world - world means operators and manufacturers - has to bring answers to allow coming into force of the directives above mentioned : it is the sense of the work undertaken within CENELEC (EEC countries and EFfA Countries). So Railway people are present in Cenelec TC 110 (EMC Directive) and Cenelec TC9X (Electricity in railway transportation): final results will be EMC performance regarding a product (a convenor, a car, a locomotive, ... ) or constraints between the whole railway system and a neighbouring system or within the railway system between infrastructure and train. Mains facts of the work in course are : - update the existing results, for example CCITI Directives (1989 Edition), multiconductor model and associated limits - identify interfaces within railway or with neighbouring - identify railway environment characteristics by setting on measurement methods taking into account partly moving system and common test campaigns. Intermediate results will be : - the ability of preventing disturbances at the source by choosing adequate feeding schema (Booster Transformer, Autotransformer) or few disturbing locomotives - the inventory of the disturbances (sources and values) generated by the whole railway system or suffered by a rail way product Final results of all these works are necessary to enforce directives (for instance EMC one on 1st of January 1996) and to improve railway transportation in the respect of a general EMC approach.
