This paper presents control strategy of electric power steering system based on permanent magnet synchronous motor. In this research, the authors analyzed two classical schemes of the construction of the steering system-with the electric motor placed on the steering column and on the steering rack. The mechanical design scheme and the electrical construction of the steering model has been presented. In general, the information from torque sensor, as well as information about vehicle speed, are transmitted to the electronic control unit of the steering mechanism. In this research the authors study the process of how to design the electric steering map characteristic curve, analyze the steering characteristic curve using the driver’s steering feel. The developed dynamic model of the steering model is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink platform. Furthermore, the PI controllers with low pass filters are implemented in the electronic control unit to regulate the motor’s current and voltage according to vehicle speed. The simulation results are used to design a real steering system for a specific automobile.
