The multipath effects inside aircraft cabins cause more severe inter-symbol interference (lSI) than those in general indoor communication environments, resulting in an increased channel impulse response (CIR) length, which in some cases could be larger than the cyclic prefix (CP) length of OFDM symbols. In this paper, we present a novel equivalent channel shortening prefilter (ECSP) to alleviate lSI for MIMO-OFDM systems in wireless avionics intra-communications (WAIC). After the introduction of the MIMO-OFDM system model in WAIC, our proposed ECSP is designed based on an optimization criterion to minimize the energy on lSI -affected equivalent channel paths while simultaneously enhancing the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). The original optimization problem is transformed into a convex problem by using a search method, introducing a slack variable and omitting the rank constraint. Simulation results show that our proposed ECSP can make the bit error rate performance with a shorter CP length close to that attained with a full-length CP, thereby improving the bandwidth efficiency of the MIMO-OFDM system in WAIC with reduced CP overhead.
