This paper presents a novel method to connect the fuel cell stack to the medium voltage grid, by using a high-frequency magnetic link and a multilevel cascaded medium-voltage converter (instead of the conventional inverter) to integrate a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) into the AC distribution grid without a step-up transformer. The paper presents and discusses the design, modeling, and analysis of integrating the proposed converters in a grid-connected fuel cell system, and the strategy to control the power flow into the grid. To validate the proposed work, the MATLAB/Simulink platform is used to model and analyze the proposed design of a 1 MW PEMFC system connected to an 11-kV grid including the control system to optimize the functioning of the fuel cell in a medium voltage grid-connected system considering the specified system performance and control complexity. The results show that the proposed system produces very good performance and since the proposed system does not need bulky and heavy low-frequency transformers to connect to the grid, a very light and compact PEMFC can be realized.
