This paper aims at design and control of a bridgeless dual-input power factor corrected (PFC) charger for solar photovoltaic (PV) panel mounted light electric vehicle (LEV). It focusses on reduction of overall component count and thus the cost of the charger with special emphasis on power quality improvement of AC input and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of PV panel input. It is derived from the Cuk converter and thus inherits the basic benefits associated with it for power factor correction. It includes the axing of bulky filter at the grid input for power quality improvement and reduction in output voltage ripple due to non-pulsating output current. Power quality of grid current is maintained in accordance with the IEC 61000-3-2 standard in constant current (CC) mode of charging. PV panel input is controlled to operate at its maximum power point (MPP) during the varying environmental conditions. This charger is designed to handle the sudden sag and swell in supply voltage. Small-signal transfer function of the charger is obtained by state-space analysis technique. It is further verified by AC-sweep analysis in PSIM software. Stable transient response of the designed controller is verified by MATLAB simulation of the charger under different dynamic conditions.
