The National Airspace System (NAS) architecture describes progressive changes to the NAS, including expected avionics/cockpit equipment and procedural changes for the next 15 years. This evolution is detailed in operational improvements (OI) in the NAS architecture. Of the 86 OIs described, approximately 30 have possible impacts on flight deck avionics or procedures. In this paper, we discuss areas of air traffic management (ATM) impact on the flight deck that may affect flight operations within the en route environment.
