After 20 years of evolution based on digital computers, electronic displays and data highways, the modern airliner cockpit and the systems with which it interfaces have reached a significant level of technology. The “big three” aircraft constructors, Boeing, Airbus Industrie and McDonnell Douglas now include, as standard, “wall-to-wall” electronic displays, ARINC 429 or 629 data highways, warning and system status displays as well as flight management systems.
