Energy storage system in a hybrid electric aircraft is composed by many thousands of interconnected cells which result in a system that are large dimensional and brings a series challenges of battery management system (BMS). Such complex battery packs requires the ability to provide accurate and rapid diagnosis of incipient faults to insure system availability and functionality. This paper presents a diagnostic scheme for Lithium-ion battery (LIB) systems of hybrid electric aircraft with specific focus on diagnosing short circuit (SC) faults and sensor faults which are critical faults in a LIB system. The fault diagnosis algorithm design presented in this paper is using the systematic methodology of structural analysis. This method is a powerful tool for studying the detectability and isolability of various fault in a system by looking at the structural model and the degree of analytical redundancy (AR) of the system. Different number and type of sensors are added to the LIB system to increase its degree of AR and to improve the fault detectability and isolability. Then, the fault detection and isolation (FDI) scheme is designed by finding proper diagnostic tests and generating corresponding residuals. The diagnostic scheme is validated using a Software-In-the-Loop (SIL) approach which shows that it can successfully detect and isolate individual cell fault (internal SC), connection fault (external SC) and sensor fault in a LIB system.
