In these experiments, we use a CO/sub 2/ laser with an electro-optic switch, based on a CdTe crystal, to chop sections of various lengths out of a 60 ns single longitudinal mode laser pulse. These pulses are then amplified and used to ablate the surface of a polished Zr-2.5Nb coupon.<>
