An analytical electromagnetic model of a novel modular axial-flux switched reluctance machine is presented, providing details for the specific magnetic circuit of this configuration. Magnetic saturation and leakage fluxes are key factors: saturated designs lead to higher power dense switched reluctance machines in general, while leakage flux is critical in this machine configuration in particular. Both aspects are considered in the magnetic circuit model, which is used to compute the machine's torque and back-electromotive force. The results of the model are compared with finite-element simulations which have been previously validated by experimental tests. The model is computationally efficient and fully parameterized and it is suitable for multivariable analysis for pre-design or optimization purposes.
