A thin type of optical polarizer is becoming one of the most useful optical components for fiber-embedded in-line optical devices or hybrid integrated optics from those low diffraction loss. Recently, we proposed and demonstrated a new type of ultra thin-size optical polarizing films consisting of the periodic multilayers of anisotropic metal island films and dielectric films prepared by using a stretching process. In this paper, we report the optimum fabrication conditions and measured optical characteristics of the polarizing films in a near-infrared wavelength region.
