In the contemporary world, the congestion of traffic in urban areas has become the root for many hassles. The situation becomes exacerbated at road intersections and traffic junctions. The traffic lights, which control the flow of traffic, is operated based on a predetermined protocol. The aim of this paper is to propose a protocol that calculates the green and red signal times at different lanes of the intersection based on range calculation using sonars for dynamic traffic light control. The proposed system reduces the average waiting time that each vehicle has to wait and overall cost of the system.
