A description is given of the DUBM 41-B towed sonar, which is currently entering service with the French Navy aboard reconverted ocean-going minesweepers. This new sonar operates on a different principle. Instead of performing the detection function at the bow end of the carrier vessel, it uses acoustic antennas which are carried in one or two towed fishes which move water at a constant height above the seabed. Thus lateral scanning is effected solely as a function of the towing vessel's movement. This type of sonar furnishes a very high resolution image, permitting a fine analysis of the seabed profile and detection of even very small objects resting on the seabed. It is a type of sonar ideally suited to fine mapping of the seabed and surveillance of long fairways.
