The stability of multi-converter power electronic systems is an important issue when there is a tight regulation of point of load converter especially in DC microgrid applications since, loads in a DC microgrid require varying voltage levels. As the converters for which the output voltage is to be regulated at a particular voltage act as a constant power load (CPL) for the preceding converter and a boost converter with CPL has an inherent instability at the output voltage. One of the basic methods is to alleviate the above-mentioned problem is to include the damping to the output LC filter of the converter, which is based on small signal modeling, but has their own limitations, such as in passive damping method an extra passive component is to be incorporated to achieve the stable output voltage of the boost converter with CPL which causes the reduction in efficiency of the system. In this paper the full state feedback controller (FSFC) is designed and applied to stabilize the output voltage of the boost converter with CPL. The design of the FSFC is carried out based on the small signal model of the converter. The advantage of this control technique is that it does not require any additional passive element thus increasing the converter efficiency unlike damping methods. The gain matrix K can be easily obtained for desired pole locations (depending on the desirable response) by pole placement method, in contrast to the active damping method where either trial and error method or a tuning method is to be adopted for deciding the gain of the controller. The pole placement method used to design the FSFC is discussed in detail and the simulation results are presented to verify the analysis.
