An innovative chopper converter for tram and light-railway applications is introduced. This solution can work with nominal voltages of 600-750 V d. c. and drive a single d. c. motor with series excitation and power rating between 130 and 300 KW. Motors taken into consideration are those of standard production. The converter can provide the following functions, in a completely static way: a) regulation of the armature current in value and direction b) regulation of the value of the field current, with fixed direction. Independently of the value of the armature current, any percentage of field weakening can be obtained in the range 5-95%. c)SCR-regulation of the braking and linematching resistors in order to maximize the amount of the energy given back to the line, in regenerative braking mode. These functions are part of a single converter. A four-quadrant motor operation is also permitted.
