In aspects, a vehicle charging diagnostic apparatus includes a voltage sensor for determining a voltage on a control pilot line and a diagnostic controller for identifying a first fault in response to detecting a negative voltage at or below a threshold. The vehicle charging diagnostic apparatus can further include a current sensor for sensing the current on the proximity pilot line. The diagnostic controller can then identify a further fault in response to detecting fluctuations in the current using the current sensor.
