The invention relates to a method for operating a rail vehicle (1), wherein a traction force of at least one driven wheel (3a, 3b, 4a, 4b) of the rail vehicle (1), which traction force acts between the particular wheel (3a, 3b, 4a, 4b) and the associated running rail (2), is controlled in an open-loop and/or closed-loop manner, wherein slip power acting between the wheel (3a, 3b, 4a, 4b) and the running rail (2), which slip power leads to wear, is reduced by a traction-force open-loop and/or closed-loop control device (5) at least at times, in that the traction force is attenuated from a first traction-force intensity, which acts during slip between the wheel (3a, 3b, 4a, 4b) and the running rail (2), and the traction force is limited to traction-force intensities which are weaker than the first traction-force intensity in a limitation time period of specified or predictable length following the start of the attenuation.
